Immanuel: God With Us

Merry Christmas!

We are celebrating Immanuel: God With Us. Our holy Lord living and dwelling among men. Our Savior living and dwelling inside us. God With Us.

This is not just a message for Christmastime. This is not just one day of the year. God is with you always. Jesus Christ is the gift given to all mankind. He is our good news of great JOY.

It is not always easy to be joyful. God is with us, but here on earth our loved ones will not always be with us. I look around and see so many friends and family missing loved ones this holiday season. The pain is still fresh and the holidays are just another reminder that there is an empty seat at the table. My heart mourns with those who mourn as I see their grief and struggle to find joy.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Immanuel. God With Us. I have been singing this song to myself for weeks. I was stopped mid-song in tears when I heard the lyrics in a new and beautiful way.

Wonderful Counselor: He hears our cries. He sees our tears. He feels our pains. He intimately knows us. He is THE Wonderful Counselor. He provides wisdom where we are lacking. He guides us through the grief-filled waters that threaten to drown us. He is here. He is available.

Mighty God: He is strong. He is stronger than this world. He has defeated death. He is stronger than our pain. He is stronger than our loss. He is mighty. He is our rescue. We may feel like we are overcome with grief, but He has overcome the grave. He is our Mighty God.

Everlasting Father: He is eternal. He will never leave us or forsake us. The flesh may fail, family may leave; but God has an everlasting hold on us. He will never let us go and never lose us to our sorrow. He will always be there.

Prince of Peace: He is the giver of peace. He IS our peace. Through Him we are granted forgiveness, are made righteous, and are given life. Though the world may strip us of comfort and earthly joy, He ushers in a heavenly peace. He calms our minds and comforts our hearts. We are able to rest in His love and His peace that passes all understanding.

So this Christmas season, praise the Lord for humbling Himself to come as an infant child to rescue the world. But praise the Lord also for being our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. When you struggle to find joy this season remember that He is near to those who draw near to Him. Remember also that in sending His Son, God the Father knew the loss He would suffer when that same Son was crucified under the weight of sin for the whole world. He knows the deep pain of loss. He is our Comfort and our Joy. He knows. He is. Immanuel.

God is with you.
